Handel’s Water Music consists of three orchestral suites he composed that was first played in 1717. For this arrangement I am using a theme from one of them. Handel was a contemporary of Bach. In fact, they were born in the same year. Unlike Bach, Handel, during his lifetime, was a very well-known and financially successful composer.
Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega is a beautiful piece of music that has been performed by the top guitarists from the last 100 years. The original uses the technique, tremolo, which can be a difficult technique to play. In this arrangement I have stripped away the tremolo in an effort to try and make it as easy as possible to play. I also tried to limit large stretches as well as limited my use of barre chords. Still not super easy to play but certainly easier than the original.
I composed Gateway to a Dream a couple days ago. I wanted to write a piece for the early intermediate fingerstyle guitar player. The form of the piece is a rondo (ABACA). In a rondo, a section of the song returns throughout the work.
Mauro Giuliani was an Italian guitarist and composer who lived from 1781-1829. He composed a lot of pieces for the guitar ranging from beginner-level pieces all the way up to pieces composed for the concert hall.
In this lesson I will teach you to play his Andantino (Op. 50, No. 1) which I see as an early intermediate level piece.
Here is my arrangement of Ludovico Einaudi’s Nuvole Bianche. Beautiful piece of music originally composed for the piano. Einaudi is an Italian composer and pianist who has composed music that incorporates a lot of different styles fused into his personal style. Such as pop, rock, classical, folk and world music.
Summertime comes from George Gershwin’s opera, Porgy and Bess. Summertime was composed in 1934 and was written in the style of a spiritual.
I’ve always loved Gershwin’s music and I look forward to arranging more of it in the future!
Anton Diabelli was an Austrian music publisher who also composed music. He is most famous for having composed the waltz that Beethoven used for his Diabelli Variations. Diabelli composed many wonderful pieces for the guitar. This is a perfect piece for the late-beginner guitar student.
This theme comes from the second movement of Smetana’s beautiful orchestral work called My Vlast. The second movement is called Vltava or The Moldau. In this movement he is trying to evoke the sound of rivers.
I composed Moroccan Nights using the double harmonic scale. The scale goes by a variety of names but what makes it stand out is that it has two large intervals in the scale called augmented 2nds.
I also use some basic rasgueados (strumming) in certain sections of the song as well as a different type of tremolo, compared to what most classical guitarists are used to.
Scarborough Fair is an old traditional English Ballad and nobody knows who actually composed the piece. I’ve always loved the version by Simon and Garfunkel and their recording inspired me to make a solo guitar arrangement of the melody.
Are you going to Scarborough Faire?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.
Remember me to one who lived there.
She once was a true love of mine….
